Without a doubt, the extraordinary old town of Herceg Novi, located on a steep slope leading to the sea, is worth discovering. Taking a relaxing stroll through its charming squares and admiring old fortresses one will find beautiful orthodox and catholic churches.
The imposing Kanli Kula fortress overlooking the old town of Herceg Novi is one of the top local attractions. It is an old prison dating back to the times of Turkish rule (between approximately 1482 and 1687) from which it is nowadays possible to enjoy astonishing views over the Bay of Kotor. In summer, the site usually hosts musical and theatrical shows.
Another point of interest in Herceg Novi is the Španjola Fortress located on the top of a hill 170 m above sea level and dating back to the 16th century. Pay a visit to Savina monastery as well. Located approximately 2 km from the bay, this religious building, dating back to the 11th century, is famous for the Gothic frescoes of its smaller church and for the superb iconostasis in the main church. What is more, from the monastery, you can enjoy extraordinary panoramic views of the bay.
Staying in Herceg Novi you can always take a trip to Dubrovnik, also known as Ragusa, a popular tourist city belonging to the Dalmatian region of Croatia. It boasts magnificent palaces, fortresses and wonderful stone beaches, and in 1979 and 1994 its historic centre was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Kotor is another famous place worth visiting in Montenegro. This coastal city, impresses visitors with extraordinary fortified buildings dating from the period of Venetian Rule, between the 15th and 17th centuries, and is found just 43 km from Herceg Novi. In fact, the fortifications of Kotor have been a World Heritage Site since 2017.
Beside the numerous places of interest, Herceg Novi is also a perfect place to relax and leave all your worries behind; and the best place for that, of course, is on the beach. Although you can pick practically any Montenegro beach and it will be ideal for sunbathing or swimming in the Adriatic Sea, Herceg Novi offers you some of the best beaches in Montenegro, where you can rent a boat to explore the beautiful Dalmatian coast or, should you prefer, practice water sports. In Herceg Novi you will easily find places to rent all the necessary equipment.

On the other hand, Herceg Novi is a great place for trekking enthusiasts as its nearby hills offer you an opportunity to map hiking routs with a starting point right next to a bus station. The roads are unmarked and are quite hard to follow, but the landscapes more than make up for the effort.
In addition, there is a mountaineering association called Subra in Herceg Novi, offering hiking tours in the nearest mountains which are practically virgin with views beyond compare.
In any case, it is not necessary at all to leave Herceg Novi to enjoy your Montenegro holidays. Have a walk along the town’s promenade or explore its squares and streets full of history, studded with small cafes with outdoor terraces, all of which serve excellent Italian-style coffee, and many offer a great selection of homemade cakes and ice-cream which is more than enough to relax, unwind and literally feel the taste of Montenegro.
